Your Perfect Wedding Cake!

So, you want to get a wedding cake, but not just any cake, one that fit perfectly with your venue, your colors, your wedding theme and your own personal style.  How do you get to that design?  At White Rose Bakery it is so important to us that your cake is perfect for you.  We don't want you to pick cake #166 out of an album, we want you to have your cake and this is how we do it:

Our design process starts with your first call to our bakery.  We will need to know the date of your wedding to be sure that we have an opening.  We will need to know the venue for your reception and approximately how many guests you are expecting.  In addition to setting a convenient time for the consultation we will also be reminding you to bring anything and everything that will give us a starting point for your design.  This can include, invitations, save the date cards, dress pictures, color swatches, styles of cake you have liked and anything else you want to include.

At the consultation, after you have samples our yummy cakes, we can start doing some sketching.  Do you like round or square?  A steeper cake or a more traditional spacing?  Do you want fresh flowers, sugar flowers?  Are you looking for a more traditional cake or do you want something more cutting edge?  What design elements do you want on the cake and how would you like to incorporate your colors?  We will take you through each of these questions, giving you different options.  Once we have an idea of the different elements you want to include we will do two or three quick sketches just to get an idea of how the cakes will look.  This gives you the opportunity to pick a cake you've actually seen.  Once the design is decided upon we will do a larger, full color sketch of your cake.  If there are specific design elements then samples will be prepared and we will give you a 4"x6" panel that will look just like the side of your cake.  Once the sketch and samples are approved and the flavors decided upon, we're set.  We will work with your wedding staff to ensure that your cake is displayed at your venue and waiting to take your breath away!

Beautiful Black, White and Silver Wedding Cake

Five tiers, octagonal cake, wrapped with black ribbon

We just received these pictures of the cake we did last May for Melissa and Tyler's beautiful wedding in the amazing Field's Sunken Ballroom at the Portland Art Museum.

Melissa did her entire wedding in black, white and silver with red accents and flowers.  She wanted to use these same colors in her cake but wanted it to be unique.  We took a five tiered octagonal cake and decorated the sides with design elements from her invitations.  To pick up the silver we applied beading to the swirls and the florist topped the cake with deep red peonies that were also included in her bouquet.

The bride was beautiful, the room was beautiful and we think the cake was beautiful!

Erica & Matt's Wedding

Erica and Matt were married this past August at the First Baptist Church in Portland followed by a beautiful reception at the Heritage Ballroom at the Governor Hotel, one of the most beautiful rooms in the city.  Matt and Erica were such a fun couple, they knew just what they wanted and as you can see from the beautiful pictures by their photographer, Paul Rich, they did an amazing job!  My favorite memory of the day was a visit from Erica's dad while the florist and I were setting up the cake.  He looked nervous, but wanted to be sure that every detail was perfect and to take time to thank the vendors in person.  What a great dad!  Our congratulations to Erica and Matt, thanks for letting us be a part of your lovely wedding!

Getting Your Perfect Cake

With the flood of media surrounding weddings these days it's hard to sort out what you want from what everyone else is telling you you should want! So how do you pick out the perfect cake for your wedding?

First, rather than bring a picture in to be copied, print out lots of pictures. Make notes about cakes you see and what specifically you like about them. Look at other aspects of your wedding, is their a design theme or color that is running through everything. It will help your cake designer if you can come in and say, "I tend to look round over square, I like cakes with a floral theme, but not fresh flowers, appliques."

Second, think about how you would describe your wedding to others. What will be the feeling, atmosphere? What is special about your venue, is it fun, elegant, sophisticated, a garden, out in the country? What makes your wedding different from others you have attended, what do you look forward to the most?

Lastly, how would your friends describe the two of you, is there some feature or aspect of your relationship? What would your friends expect you to do?

Answering these questions will give your cake designer not only a direction, but some specific features that you like. Having this information will help the designer come up with a design that will be unique, fit with your wedding and will have your friends admiring the cake and commenting on how perfectly it suits you!
